Legendary Difficulty Tips

Survive The Library, conserve ammo, and manage shields on Legendary.

Shield Management

On Legendary, your energy shield breaks in one or two elite carbine bursts. Treat cover as mandatory, not optional — peek-shoot-reload behind corners every engagement.

Black Eye Skull removes passive shield recharge entirely; even without it, Legendary punishes standing in open ground during Hunter and elite encounters.

  • Break line-of-sight before your shield pops — audio cue is subtle
  • Melee only when shield is full and one grunt is isolated
  • Carry plasma for shield strip; never dump MA5B into gold elites first
  • In co-op, stagger peeking so one Spartan draws fire while other recharges
Tip: If your shield flickers red, disengage — Legendary chip damage kills before you finish a reload.

The Library

The Library remains the campaign's difficulty spike: endless Flood in tight corridors with limited sightlines. Enter with shotgun at max ammo, pistol secondary, and every grenade type you collected.

Do not rush the light bridge segments. Trigger Flood waves deliberately, clear backtrack paths, then push the objective marker. Panic sprinting separates Legendary clears from hour-long loops.

  • Shotgun + melee for infection forms — conserve pistol for combat forms
  • Grenades on clustered combat forms before shotgun cleanup
  • Needler / plasma for shielded combat forms in later rooms
  • Co-op: one player holds rear choke while others advance

Ammo Economy

Legendary forces weapon discipline. Every MA5B mag spent on grunts is a mag missing for an elite pack. Headshot grunts with pistol; reserve rifle ammo for shielded targets.

Power weapons spawn on timers in fixed locations — learn CE spawn tables. Rocket launcher for Hunters, sniper for Jackals on ledges, shotgun exclusively for Flood interiors.

  • Pistol-first on unshielded grunts — 1 headshot, 1 body max
  • Swap to fallen Covenant weapons before reloading empty human mags
  • Pick up needlers before elite rooms — needles track on Legendary chaos
  • Never carry two human primaries — ammo types do not overlap
