First Campaign Playthrough

Difficulty picks, mission order, and habits for new Spartans on PS5, Xbox, or Game Pass.

Before You Start

Halo: Campaign Evolved remasters the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign with modern visuals, optional split-screen, four-player online co-op, and crossplay between PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5. Your first run should focus on learning Covenant behavior, weapon swap timing, and grenade discipline — not chasing every Skull on Heroic.

Install on your primary platform first and confirm your controller or mouse sensitivity feels comfortable in the opening Pillar of Autumn sections. Co-op progress is shared, but solo Skull collection rules still apply per player profile.

Tip: Complete the tutorial firing range on Pillar of Autumn — melee, grenades, and headshots are faster here than under fire later.

Difficulty Picks

Normal is the recommended first campaign difficulty: enemies use cover intelligently but do not melt your shields in two bursts. Heroic teaches energy shield timing without Legendary's brutal damage spikes.

Legendary is viable for veterans who know Halo CE level layouts, but new Spartans should expect frequent checkpoint restarts on Truth and Reconciliation and The Library.

  • Easy — story focus, minimal punishment for exploration
  • Normal — best balance for first-time Campaign Evolved players
  • Heroic — tighter ammo economy, elites dodge more aggressively
  • Legendary — shield breaks in seconds; prioritize plasma pistols and needlers

Mission Flow

The campaign follows the classic CE arc across 13 missions: escape Pillar of Autumn, investigate Halo, push through the Flood outbreak, and assault the Control Room. Operation: METEORITE content may appear as post-launch updates — check our missions page after July 28, 2026.

Play in order at least once. Silent Cartographer and Assault on the Control Room are pivot points where vehicle sections and open terrain change your loadout priorities.

  • Missions 1–3 — learn MA5B, plasma pistol combo, and Warthog driving
  • Missions 4–6 — introduce stealth, sniper lanes, and interior CQC
  • Missions 7–9 — Flood swarms; shotgun and pistol become mandatory
  • Missions 10–13 — mixed Flood/Covenant; conserve rockets for Hunters
